Modern democratic systems were designed for a different era, built around low-frequency participation and limited information flow. Today, technology enables continuous input, real-time feedback, and more direct engagement between people and decisions. This creates the opportunity for higher-resolution governance, where citizens participate more actively and representation becomes fluid, contextual, and accountable.
As automation and artificial intelligence reshape the nature of work, economies and institutions must adapt. The challenge is not only economic, but structural, ensuring that participation, opportunity, and value creation remain accessible to all. By enabling citizens to co-create policies around health, equity, and sustainability, decision-making becomes more resilient, inclusive, and aligned with long-term outcomes.
As artificial intelligence enters public administration, accountability rests on three things - people can understand what is being decided, challenge how it has been framed, and see what their contribution changed. That is true whatever technology an institution runs on, and it becomes more valuable as the technology becomes more capable.
